American Teen – DVD Review

by Jenny Jones
This movie is heartwarming, funny, touching and sad and oh so very real. The documentary style adds to the realism of the stories and makes it even easier for audiences to relate to each of the characters. I guarantee there is at least one situation in this film that mirrors a moment from your own high school career. In fact they should have called the movie “Global Teen” or “Every Teen” instead of “American Teen” because it touches on situations, both good and bad, that are experienced by almost every teenager at some point in their lives as they struggle to make that leap from adolescence to adulthood.

Megan is the popular and beautiful rich girl that basically owns the school.

Mitch is the typical heartthrob that “any girl would give her left tit to go out with.”

Colin is the jock and star of the basketball team, relying on a scholarship to get him into college.

Jake is the anti-social, pimple-faced band geek looking for a sock “to complete his pair”.

And finally Hannah is the anti-conservative, artsy-fartsy wild child that wants nothing more than to get the hell out of Warsaw after high school.

It may sound like a total rip off of John Hughes “Breakfast Club” but it couldn’t be further from the 80s comedy classic. “American Teen” intimately depicts the lives of these and other Indiana high school students as they face the battles and glories of their senior year. We witness the heartbreak, the popularity contests, the self-discovery, the acceptance and maturation of these young people during one of the most emotionally charged years of their lives. It is happy and sad and definitely eye-opening for young people who may be struggling through their teens themselves. I highly recommend you check out “American Teen” and relive those years when you were a Princess, a Jock, a Heartthrob, a Nerd or a Rebel yourself.

8/10
