DVD Review: Bolt

“Bolt” is an entertaining children’s movie that the entire family will enjoy. We watched it with adults, a 10 year old and a 1 1/2 year old and everyone laughed and had a good time. Miley Cyrus, better known to her fans as Hannah Montana, is the voice of the dowey-eyed Penny and John Travolta is the voice of her furry friend Bolt. Surprisingly, they never break out into song or dance…thank god!

Bolt is a dog on a mission to find his person, Penny. Unbeknownst to Bolt, Penny has been keeping a major secret from him his entire life. Now, as he sets out into the cruel world for the first time in search of the only friend and family he’s ever known, Bolt painfully uncovers the truth about his life. Ever since the day that Penny rescued him from the pet store, Bolt’s life has been a lie, he is not the super dog that he believed he was with super powers and a super bark. He is just a regular dog who does not know the first thing about how a normal canine behaves. Now more then ever, with the help of a few new friends, Bolt desperately wants to find his owner and find out who he really is.

This path of self-discovering is packed full of action and sound that leaps right off the screen, booms in your ears and shakes you right down to your bones. It is awesome! If you have a nice sub-woofer make sure it is turned on for this movie because the base will knock you back in your seat. Motorcycles, fighter jets, gunfire, trains and of course the infamous “super bark” are just some of the jaw-dropping sounds that explode everywhere around you. While the little ones are amused by the cute and cuddly depiction of the characters, the older kids and grown ups will be blown away by the high flying stunts and amazing audio experiences of this movie.

The Dolby 5.1 soundtrack is exquisite, delivering potent bass, crisp dialogue, and no shortage of well-conceived atmospheric and directional effects.

So get the whole family together and get your hands on “Bolt”. You are guaranteed to enjoy it!
