I have seen the film ten times, and I have read the novel. I have a pretty good idea of what is being said. Listening to the dialog in the film and following along with the new subtitles, I think they have made a more literal translation. In one scene in particular, when Eli and Oscar are lying in Oscar's room, Oscar asks "Do I have a chance with you?". This is different from the theatrical subtitles. However, I read in a comment on an IMDB forum, that this is actually the English translation of the expression that Swedish teenagers would have used in the early Eighties when asking a girl out. Point being, for all of us who do not speak Swedish, maybe Magnolia really does know what they are doing.
