Uma Thurman Down for More Kill Bill, Says Ideas Are ‘Awesome’

uma

“Yeah, I think it’d be fun!” Thurman enthusiastically replied when asked if she’d be up for playing Beatrix once again. In terms of actual progress on the script, Uma revealed that, “[Tarantino and I] did chat, we did chat. He has not yet finished the script. I don’t even really know if he’s really started it, although I got a taste of some of his ideas and they are really good.”

Disney/Miramax Downsizing = Bad News For Indie Films

Variety reports that the larger Disney studio will now handle certain, “marketing, distribution, operations and administrative support functions from its Burbank headquarters.” That amounts to an almost 75% reduction in their staff down to just 20 remaining executives. Although Disney isn’t naming names for now, a series of meetings next week will say who stays and who goes. Word is that some of the people let go will be from the production and development side of things, with such rumored names floating around as production prexy, Keri Putnam, and acquisitions veep, Peter Lawson.

Ratner blasts critics

Fans of the X-MEN franchise were weary when first hearing about Ratner directing the third film for the installment. Well if you saw LAST STAND, then it’s possible your in the huge crowd of people who thought it was garbage. This is how Ratner feels about the response, “You can’t make these people happy. I’m kind of the anti-Christ to these comic book geeks. Every single person that wrote shit went to see that movie multiple times because a movie doesn’t gross $200 something million unless people go to see it more than once.”

Of course, he continued, “Every single person who said, ‘I’m never seeing that movie’, they were the first ones there. What are they concerned about? It’s out of the filmmaker’s hands. A film is a collaborative effort. How’s a person sitting at home going to worry about how a movie is going to turn out to be?” I did go see it, once. I love X-MEN regardless of who directs it, but after seeing it, I didn’t need to see it again.

It gets worse. Ratner claims that he made the franchise more popular than ever, “The most ridiculous statement I’ve read is – and of course I looked at the internet after the movie came out – that I buried the franchise. “If I buried the franchise how the fuck did they make a Wolverine? I mean, that’s ridiculous. And they’re making three other fucking X-Men movies. Mine kept the franchise alive!”

Spider-Man 4 to start filming in March

spidey

“We’re hoping that it’s the first week in March,” said Raimi.

At the moment, pre-production is in full swing, even as screenwriter Gary Ross (”great director and a very fine writer,” said Raimi) continues to work on the script.

“He’s working on a draft,” he continued. “I just gave him some notes and he’s doing a rewrite right now.”

On other fronts, “Spider-Man 4″ continues to chug along. “The production is starting to come together,” Raimi told us. “I’ve got a production designer who is starting to design the sets and the environments that the picture will take place in. We just brought aboard Scott Stokdyk as one of the two visual effects supervisors, and I worked with him on all three ‘Spider-man’ pictures.”

With Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst set to reprise their roles, Raimi and his team will soon turn their attention to filling out the rest of the cast. “None of the casting has really taken place, but we’re starting to think about that now,” the director said.

Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods Pushed, Going 3-D!

MGM Studios has decided to push Joss Whedon’s anticipated The Cabin in the Woods, directed and co-written by Cloverfield’s Drew Goddard, back nearly a year, from its original release date of February 5, 2010 to the new date of January 14, 2011.

MGM reps tell ShockTillYouDrop.com the reason they’re doing this is because the early response to the film has been phenomenal and they’re going to spend six months or so converting the picture to 3-D.

There is nothing else scheduled for that 2011 date, which is the four-day weekend to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr, although the fourth Underworld movie is currently scheduled to open one week later.

Disney Extends Toy Story 3D Double Feature Run

toystory

Chuck Viane, in Disney’s domestic distribution department, called the extension “open-ended”, but it likely won’t run past November 2nd. That’s the day when the studio debuts its 3-D holiday flick, A Christmas Carol. The solid showing has Disney up in arms, and we’ll likely see more classics rendered for today’s 3-D-manding (get it?) audiences. Beauty and the Beast, an obvious test balloon, is set to have a 3-D release in 2011.

Jon Favreau Will Not Direct The Avengers

MTV talked to Favreau about The Avengers while he was promoting Couples Retreat, and his statement about directing the film was quite clear:

They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available. It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say. It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor. How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.”

watercoolerRaimi no fan of SM3?
For all of you (like me) who really couldn’t stand SPIDER-MAN 3, you’ve got some pretty good company: Sam Raimi himself. The director spoke to Empire Magazine (via CHUD) and he said that he’s still a little upset at how SPIDER-MAN 3 turned out. “I don’t even want to comment on Venom,” said Raimi explaining, “there were different opinions on the third film and I didn’t really have creative control, so to speak.” In other words, he didn’t want Venom in the film at all but the people at Marvel really pushed for that character because he was a fan favorite. Raimi doesn’t blame the fans and their love for Venom because he admits “I’m the one that doesn’t understand” the character’s popularity. The man was quite diplomatic though saying he didn’t want to disparage his partners on that film and was looking forward to SPIDER-MAN 4 where he would have sole creative control over the film. “I’ve gotta be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film,” says Raimi. I can’t believe it took Marvel three films to realize this… The full interview isn’t online yet but you can read snippets courtesy of CHUD here.

Fox Refuses To Pay Theater Exhibitors Cost of 3-D Glasses
It has been a rough week for 20th Century Fox: First a huge batch of their Slumdog Millionaire DVDs get shipped without special features, then a workprint of one of their major tentpole releases gets leaked onto the internet. To that list, you can now add on one more mess: THR reported this past Tuesday that Fox was doing an about face in its agreement to co-finance the rollout of 3-D screens with theater exhibitors, refusing to pay the fees associated with the use of 3-D glasses (fees that can run over $1 million per film, in order to purchase and pass out the glasses). Now exhibitors, who have already spent millions converting their systems to display 3-D films, are pissed.

According to an article on EW, one exhibitor fumed:

I’m already paying fees to RealD for the systems. I’m paying to put in the silver screens and I’m paying to train employees to run the product. To come in at this point and say they aren’t going to pay for the glasses, yet they want all the upside of the revenue, is ridiculous.

Zack Snyder on Watchmen’s Box Office and Director’s Cut Theatrical Release
While appearing at ShoWest to accept the 2009 Director of the Year Award, Zack Snyder responded to questions about the disappointing box office of Watchmen and how this might effect the prospects of the Director’s Cut being released theatrically.

“Thing thing about Watchmen is it’s a lot of craziness. It’s a long movie, it’s rated R.” “Everyone is talking about Monsters vs. Aliens, which is a cool movie, comes out and makes like $58 million and everyone is like, ‘Oh my god, it’s the hugest hit ever!’ And then a R-rated movie, two and a half hours long with superheroes raping each other makes $55 million dollars and every-one’s like ‘WHAT?’ How is that possible? I’m pretty happy with the movie”

Star Trek Sequel Prepares For Warp Speed
Paramount is flexing its muscles and showing some confidence in the upcoming franchise-rekindling film, Star Trek, by already going forward with the sequel.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Super Bowl viewers in the United States will have a 3D ad experience, but it’ll be a no-D day in Canada.

A 3D ad campaign for the upcoming feature film Monsters vs. Aliens will be part of the Super Bowl ad extravaganza on NBC on Sunday, Feb. 1. More than 150 million pairs of 3D glasses will be distributed through various retail outlets in the U.S.

In Canada, however, Paramount has decided not to stage a similar campaign through CTV, which has Canadian rights to the big game.

One of the main reasons is that NBC is using the opportunity to cross-promote a new episode of its series Chuck. Viewers will be encouraged to keep their 3D glasses for a special episode of Chuck that will air the next night, Monday, Feb. 2, on NBC.

In Canada, however, Chuck airs on Citytv, rather than on CTV or any of its affiliates. Thus, the cross-promotion element doesn’t work.

Canadian football fans are used to not seeing the biggest ad campaigns that roll out annually in the U.S. on Super Bowl Sunday. That’s because Canadian broadcast rules allow the Canadian rights-holder to run their own ads not only on their own station, but also to superimpose those ads on the U.S. station that is broadcasting the event in Canada.

The practice, which is known as simulcasting, has been a source of frustration through the years for some Canadians who want to see what all the Super Bowl ad fuss is about. Most of the time it’s much ado about not that much, quite frankly.

Nonetheless, this year the costly Monsters vs. Aliens promotion already has been getting a lot of attention. DreamWorks Animation chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg went so far as to describe the stunt as “perhaps the biggest media-advertising event in history.”

Well, not in Canada … unless you have a way to watch a direct feed from the United States, that is.

Monsters vs. Aliens is scheduled to be in theatres on March 27.

Movie-List will of course have the trailer online if and when it is available.

There will be a new twist to this year’s Super Bowl commercials – a 3-D twist.
DreamWorks Animation is giving away some 150 million 3-D glasses at 28,000 locations around the country so people can watch a 90-second sneak preview of an upcoming animated feature called “Monsters vs. Aliens.”
DreamWorks’ CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg calls it “perhaps the biggest media-advertising event in history.” And how much will it cost? Katzenberg will only say, “tens of millions of dollars.”
He promises the glasses won’t be the lame, red-blue system that’s been around for years. He says the new technology is superior.
So, where do you find these free glasses? They’ll supposedly be available at Pepsi/SoBe Life Water displays at grocery, drug and electronics stores and big-box retailers.
